Studio 34 Creative Arts at 34 Elton Street If you are interested in the creative arts, Studio 34 Creative Arts Center is the place to go. We are located in Rochester, New York’s Neighborhood of the Arts. Classes for beginner through master level and private studio rental for all things glass, metals, and more! Our teachers are 28 local artists, professional metalsmiths and visiting faculty from around the world.

Traveling to take classes? Let us know what you want to learn and when. We will custom design a learning experience for you. Private class sessions are available days/evenings and weekends including Sunday, Please give us as much notice as possible. Home school, scouts, team building workshops. Age appropriate projects for ages 4 to 104.

Places to visit while in Rochester

George Eastman, the father of modern photography, lived just around the corner from the studio. Literally! Really! It’s a three minute walk from our door. The International Museum of Photography & Film is located on his estate. The estate gardens and photography exhibits are a must see while in Rochester whether you are a photographer or not. There are hands on exhibits suitable for young children. Year round beauty and inspiration!

The Strong Museum of Play is an internationally recognized for collections and exhibits that are family oriented.

The Corning Museum of Glass is 1.5 hours away. Another must visit for glass artists and collectors.

Fusing Open Studio and Private Classes

An orientation is required prior to or at first open studio session

Fusing open studio: Bring or purchase your own glass , eye protection, scoring tool and create projects. Enjoy access to student tools, kilns and equipment. Kiln firing fees are based on the size of kiln ($35-75) kind of of program. Buy glass from us and fusing open studio is $10/hour Bring your own glass: $15/hour. Open studio artists bring their own scoring tool. Need to rent a scoring tool? Scoring tool is $10/session. Running pliers and breaker available for free during sessions.
Reservations are required. We appreciate 24 hour advance notice.
Free orientation is required prior to first session. After orientation , artists set up and work independently
Open studio is a supervised non teaching time for those who can work independently and have taken classes to qualify.
Firing fees (fuse/slump/contour/tack) include kiln shelf paper : cost per firing is $35-75/kiln load . Don’t have a full kiln load? Share a kiln firing with another artist.
Some molds may not be available as they are reserved for classes. Mold selection: label your chosen mold.
Intermediate artists are expected to provide firing program(s) specific to their project, type of firing, and thickness of glass.
Prerequisite for fusing open studio: * Introduction to Glass Fusing and Slumping or equivalent experience and permission of the studio director. Please schedule an orientation prior to or at first session. *some classes do not count towards qualifying for open studio as these classes don’t provide enough scoring experience. This includes the following classes: fused dichoric glass jewelry, ornaments, Bubble Bowl. These classes don’t provide enough scoring experience to qualify for open studio.
Fusing open studio fee : $10/hour per artist. Bring your own scoring tool and safety glasses. Glass and kiln firing are extra.
Need to rent or buy a scoring tool? We charge additional $10/session to rent a student scoring tool. All tools are available for purchase and may be test driven prior to purchase.
Casting fees available upon request.
Fusing Private classes: need a review or help with a project ? Want to learn a new technique? Looking to buy a kiln or have one and need help firing it up?
We offer Private Classes by appointment. Bring your own eye protection. Please give us at least one week advance notice for reservations. Private classes are ideal for those who need a refresher or skill tune up, too.
Private classes: $100/hour/student plus glass and kiln firing. Two hour commitment please.
Discounted group rates available (4 or more students). Contact the studio for more information.
Intermediate/advanced students bring their own scoring tool.
Cold Work : Bench grinders, sanders, flat laps, glass saws for qualified students.
Open studio sessions are reserved on a first come first serve basis. If you will be late or miss a session, please contact the studio director. We limit how many people are in the studio and maintain a waiting list for open studio sessions. No show and no call may result in forfeiture of access.

Metals/Metalsmith Open Studio and Private Class Guidelines

orientation required prior to first open studio/bench rental

Metalsmith Bench may be rented by the hour or for longer periods. Consumables (blades, metal, solder) not included and may be purchased from the studio or bring your own. Provide your own safety glasses and consumables.
Fee: $20/hour basic (no torch) $100/hour with use of soldering torch. Prerequisite: metals classes including intermediate soldering or equivalent experience , instructor recommendation and permission of the studio director.
Private classes: $125- $150/hour /student. Materials (consumables: metal, solder) are not included. Base metals, sterling and fine silver available for purchase. Other metals may be pre ordered. There is a two hour minimum commitment for private classes.
Couples interested in creating their wedding bands may arrange a consultation prior to or at their private class (consultation only $125/hour). Wedding rings normally take more than one private class session for beginners and those with no prior metals experience . Couples receive a discount for multiple sessions. Contact the studio for more info.
Private classes are by appointment with minimum one week advance reservation. Book earlier for your choice of dates. There is a two hour minimum commitment. Additional time may be arranged. t Deposit due at reservation. See “private class” below to send deposit.

Flamework/Torchwork Open Studio and Private Classes

Orientation , by appointment, required prior to or at first open torch session. Orientation may be scheduled the same day as your first open torch session.

Flamework Open Torch: Bring or purchase your own glass , tools, and protective eye wear. Didymium eye glasses may be rented for $5/session. Boro eye glass protection rental is $10/session. Choice of 12 different torches including Bethlehem, GTT, Nortel, Carlisle. Prerequisite: intermediate level class, equivalent experience and permission of the studio director. Please schedule your free orientation prior to or at your first open torch session.
Fee: $15/hour/student soft glass. $20/hour /student borosilicate (aka Pyrex) (see 10 hour prepay pack discount)
Bring your own torch*: $20/hour includes connections (BYOT)

10 hour prepay pack. Soft glass: $125 Boro $180 Always includes kiln annealing.

Private classes and studio help:

- Supervised open studio and Private classes: need a review or help with a project ? Supervised open studio provides assistance with projects and techniques learned in class. Supervised studio time offers helpful support and practice but not instruction on new techniques. Want to learn new techniques
- Supervised Open Studio and Private Classes are by appointment. Please give us at least one week advance notice for private class reservations.
- Private classes: $125-$150/hour/student includes kiln annealing. Maximum number for a private class is 4 students. There is a two hour minimum commitment.
Glass is not included in private classes
Deposit is required.

Torch Test Drive : choose from several small and medium torches
Open torch fees : small and mid range torches : soft glass $15/hour; boro glass $18/hour.
Triple Mix and multi stud /bring your own torch*: $22/hour.
Test drive sessions by appointment only and must qualify (same as open torch, i.e. orientation prior to first session, intermediate level , and permission of the studio director.
* If you want to bring your own Torch: Please contact studio prior to first session. BYOT must be tested to make sure your torch connections work with our system. Quick connects are needed. Check with studio director for type of connections and send us an image of your hose connections.
Private classes may be arranged. $100-$150/hour /student plus materials. Bring your own eye protection or rent a pair of student didymium glasses ($5/session)

Precious Metal Clay Guidelines

Precious Metal Clay services : kiln firing, tools and textures available by appointment and during open studio. Students who have left -over PMC after class can have their pieces fired at no cost up to 30 days following class. After 30 days following class, kiln fee is $25 for a kiln load for Fine Silver. (PMC Plus, PMC 3). Other metals require different materials and firing schedules and costs. Cost depends on which metal to be fired ( typically $35-50/kiln load).
Don’t have enough pieces to fill a kiln? Share a kiln load with another artist. We’ll make the arrangements
Private class sessions available by appointment $100/hour. Kiln firing is not included. Torch firing and soldering included if private class includes these techniques. Metal clay may be purchased or bring your own new metals in unopened packets.
Private classes require a deposit for materials and tuition balance due at class.

Mosaic Open Studio and Private Class

*an orientation is required prior to or at first open studio session.

Open studio is a time for artists to work on projects. Access to the studio is for students and artists to practice and work independently. It is not a teaching time. Someone is supervising, but not teaching. To qualify for open studio, artists will have the skills to work on projects independently. Open studio is not a substitute for a missed class. If you miss a class in the sequence, you may arrange a private class (see cost below) to learn the missed techniques.

Cost for guided supervision , consultation or private class : $100/hour. Glass and materials not included. Students provide their own scoring tool and eye protection and purchase or bring their own glass and substrate. Must be arranged in advance by appointment. Minimum 2 hour commitment per class.

Open studio after your class has ended may be arranged. Cost is $10/hour if you bring your own tools: artists provide or purchase their own scoring tool, glass, and protective eye wear. Want to rent our tools? Open studio with tool rental is $20/hour.

Stained Glass Open Studio and Private Classes

Orientation is required prior to or at first open studio session for qualified students.
Open studio after your class has ended may be arranged. Artists provide or purchase their own scoring tool, glass, and consumables: solder, foil, flux, and protective eye wear. Cost is $10/hour if you bring your own tools.

Want to rent our tools? Open studio with our tools is $20/session including a scoring tool.

Intermediate/advanced students may arrange open studio for guided supervision or consultation for individual projects. Prerequisite: Introduction to Stained Glass (4 week sessions) , equivalent experience, and permission of the instructor. See “private class or consultation below”.
*Three hour stained glass mini workshop does not qualify students for open studio.
Cost for private class or consultation $100/hour/student. Must be arranged in advance. Deposit is required . Private classes are scheduled at 2 hour minimum. Additional hours may be arranged.
Group rates are available for private classes. Contact the studio for more information and discounts.

Open studio is not a substitute for a missed class in a multi session workshop. If you miss a class, you may arrange a private session with the instructor to keep up with class. Minimum 2 hours.
