Office Party

My office had a party at Studio 34 Creative Arts Center. As you can see from the fused pieces, we are not a serious bunch. We learned how to cut glass and assemble these pieces before they went into the kiln to be melted. This was more fun than it sounds. I hope the boss lady sees this and takes us there again. 🙂

WOW!

QuartzWow!  Thank you for the excellent workshop.   Ray took a comprehensive subject and broke it down into categories with lots of eye popping examples.   Looking forward to taking this to the next level.  Thank you for opening my mind to gems and minerals.

Our second family class

We just took our second family class over Spring break.   Our two sons,  their two cousins,  and all four grandparents made glass bowls.  Having no experience in the glass world,  no one knew what to expect.    The quality of the teachers at Studio 34 speaks for why they’ve been around for over 15 years.   They know how to teach different levels and learning styles.    Thank you,  Studio 34!

They never disappoint

Students working on metal

Students working on metal

The best thing about Studio 34 is everything!     I’ve tried different classes and they never disappoint.  Well, maybe a little. My first flamework class was for two hours.  Time flew by and when Marilyn said class was nearing an end,  it felt like we had just begun.

My husband was making a marble and having more fun than I’ve seen in a long time. They have Hot Date Night and we both attended as a Valentine’s Day gift for each other. Our next date will be metalsmith rings.

Rug Hooking Workshop

Can’t wait to take Molly Colegrove’s Rug Hooking workshop.   Molly’s art is widely known.  Thank you,   Marilyn Lipshutz and  Studio 34 for offering this.   I’ve wanted to learn hooking for a long time.

Kim Fields Workshop

Kim Fields

Kim Fields’ workshops were better than anything I could have imagined.  I had heard Kim’s a great teacher,  but she isn’t.  She’s beyond great.   One of the best classes I’ve been in and I’ve taken a lot in different studios.    Small class size and getting to know other artists in this wonderful friendly atmosphere are what this Studio offers.    Have Kim back? ….I’ll be back!

Unique for a summer family outing

I’d been looking for something unique for a summer family outing and found Studio 34 Art Center in Rochester, New York. Our experience could not have been better. The studio director suggested different options and she was easy to talk to. She even sent pictures so we could decide what to learn. Wish there was a place like this closer to home, but the travel was worth it.

This place is like a candy store

Know what this is? This is a small section of glass colored rod at Studio 34 Creative Arts Center. They have a terrific assortment of different kinds of glass to choose from. It’s overwhelming, really, to see their shelves loaded with delicious colors. As an intermediate flameworker, this place is like a candy store. Tools and books and glass, oh my!

Dear Marilynne and Maya,

Thank you for the wonderful feedback. Both boys enjoy being at the studio, and they will be back soon. What you have there at Studio 34 is pretty awesome.
Thank you!

An extraordinary place in Rochester, NY

Studio 34 Art Center is an extraordinary place in Rochester, New York. Summer, 2017 we decided on a summer staycation within 50 miles from our home in Buffalo. We researched and found Studio 34 which was 60 miles from home. Glad we expanded our boundary our boundary. For beginners with little, experience, these teachers are patient and instilled confidence. We planned to take one class and ended up signing up for three more.

Studio 34 is one of Rochester’s 10 best places to learn, and it’s well deserved . The owner, Marilyn, leads this group of creative artists who know how to teach. Thank you, Studio 34, for making our summer vacation creative and adventurous. We won’t wait until next summer to return for more classes.

Fun and very personal

Date Night fusing was a hoot. We were totally psyched when we arrived to find out this was going to be just us and one other couple. It was fun and very personal. We learned how to do that thing with glass where it transforms and is beautiful. Thanks! We all agreed it was a great experience and we want to do it again.

Family visit

We live in Virginia. Our daughter wanted to visit University of Rochester before applying, so we took the opportunity to do a family trip to a city we’ve never been to. After calling Marylyn who owns Studio 34 Creative Arts Center, we planned our activities. She offered age appropriate suggestions such as Strong Museum and The Eastman Museum. This lovely person took time to share her lifelong Rochester experiences with us. Our family visited just those two places and were not disappointed. We didn’t get to meet Marilyn during this visit, but we plan to take a class at her studio next time.

Too much to choose from.

Just took my 10th class! Thanks for the encouragement to step out of my comfort zone. I love melting glass but your metalsmith teachers are tempting me to do more. The only thing wrong about this place is the fact that they have too much to choose from.

Different date night experience

What a creative place! We were looking for a different date night experience and signed up for their Hot Date Night. Studio 34 was voted one of Rochester’s best places to learn, and its easy to see why. We were one of just two couples in Erik’s class that night, their maximum number . Small class size is what they advertise and it makes for a special experience. Fun fun fun. Thank you, Erik!

Cool place

Cool place.

“Cool” according to both teens

What can you do with your family that everyone wants to do? Two teenagers and a golf addicted husband? Studio 34!  Our private class set up by Marilyn and taught by her was a “blast” according to both teens. We blew glass ornaments in the morning session.  The afternoon session was more glass.  We had to come back next day to get our glass when cooled off.  It really was “cool” according to both teens.  It’s been a challenge to find a family activity for this group, especially in summer.  But we intend to do it as long as we can.

Thanks Marilyn, Studio 34 owner, for making a special experience for us.

Way more than expected

This was not what I expected. It was way more.

Found the proverbial jackpot at this place

Vacationing in Rochester looking for something unusual. Found the proverbial jackpot at this place. They customized two classes with little notice. The whole family had fun, learned something new, and left with some pretty interesting ideas for more projects at home.

This was a gift we gave ourselves. We’re thinking of next year’s visit already.

I’m a hooker! Rug Hooking

Thank you Studio 34 for bringing Molly Colegrove. I watched my grandma make hooked rugs and I’ve wanted to learn the technique. Molly teaches a “painterly approach” to rug hooking. Please please do an advanced class. I want to incorporate different materials and textures now .

More than you’d expect

Having no idea what we were doing, we decided to try their Hot Date Night. The experience was not what we were expecting. This was more than you’d expect if you knew what to expect! It was just us and one other couple! It was like a private class for just the 4 of us.

Serious Fun!

Our instructor made us feel calm and relaxed while we played with fire in our first flamework class. Kudos to Lindsey for her patience. They advertise Serious Fun and it really was.

Beads by Me

Marilyn is a great teacher. I have to admit, I was afraid of fire and was ready to change my mind up to the moment I walked in there. After a short lecture about safety, she showed us how to light our torches. Marilyn offered to light the torch for me, but explained it’s easy to do and students need to know how to adjust them. I like her voice. She’s calm and talks a little too softly. This was more fun than I expected it to be.

Small class policy

Date Night was nothing like we expected. Last time we did a date night art event with 14 couples, this was 2 couples including me and my girlfriend. We thought no one else signed up or maybe it was the weather because it was only 4 people. But they said this is their policy for small classes. We both liked the way the teacher was interested in both teaching and making sure we had fun.

Rochester’s best kept secret

Husband wanted to do something different for our first night out since the new baby in December. A coworker said he’d been to this place and we went on his recommend. Our first time we made glass marbles and little sculptures. We already signed up for the metalsmith rings class and want to bring another couple with us. Most of their classes are pretty small. This gem is Rochester’s best kept secret.

Hooked on melting glass

Okay. So I took this pic because I thought it was neat, especially when she said it’s glass. Now I want to learn how. I’m a beginner and I’m hooked on melting glass at this place. They do it all here. The class I just took is called Flame and Fusion. It’s more than fun.

It’s SERIOUS FUN, like they say.

Special Summer

As a full time school teacher, I consider it a rare and wonderful opportunity when I can be a student. I took the summer off to relax, play, go on adventures. A friend suggested taking a class at Studio 34 Creative Arts Center and went with me.

Their range of classes made me dizzy and we hardly knew where to begin. Our first class was fusing and slumping and we both loved it. Then we did silver metal earrings. I took another fusing class then we both attended Hot Date Night Lost Your Marbles.

Not one of these classes can be said to be my favorite because ALL of them are. Their teachers are well trained and professional. When we signed up, I was not aware that their class size is very small. We were delighted to be two of just four students ! In one class, we were the only two students. According to Marilyn who runs this wonderful studio, they never cancel classes because of low enrollment.

I am not going to wait until next summer to continue taking classes there.

Upstate New York has the best place to learn

I never heard of this place when  I saw it on the list of Rochester’s top places to learn.   Out of curiosity,  I checked their web page.   Then I signed up for a class.  Then I signed up for more.   Studio 34 earns that place on the list.   They are known for small class size and that’s probably the best thing ever.   My first class had three students and one heck of an excellent instructor.   Barbara DeYoung could not have been better, more attentive, patient.     My next class,  enameling,  was with Yvone Copolo.   This artist is one of the best I’ve ever seen and I’m honored to be in her class.   While this class had 6 students,  it was a friendly group.   My next class will be something in glass.     I’m so glad to have found a place that really stands up for it’s ideals of putting students first.     Thank you!

Why they are the best in Rochester is obvious

Jeremy and I got a gift certificate and we used it for a class at Studio 34.  If we hadn’t received the certificate, we might not have discovered this place on our own.  Our class had 4 other students besides ourselves and two teachers.  Both teachers were enthusiastic and friendly and it looked like they were having as much fun as we were.   I took a class before the holidays at a different studio.  There were too many  students in that class  and one teacher.  She probably was a good teacher.  But it was crowded and she was stretched thin. Studio 34 sets a maximum number of students and they stick to that limit for  good reason.

Studio 34  says it’s known for  having small class size and it sure makes a difference.  We were greeted by the studio manager who was warm and seemed genuinely  interested in getting to know us. Both teachers were enthusiastic and fun.

We will be back, Studio 34!  Thank you for the fun time in your nice learning center.

Missing some Serious Fun

My daughter and I took  lots of classes at Studio 34.  Our last class was 7 months ago and we can’t wait until they reopen again.  Most of our classes were glass projects.  Then we took a class  working with metals. Now we want to do more with Maya who is one of the best teachers around.   Class was just the two of us  and Maya, which seems to be the way this studio works.     We eagerly await the reopening of this lovely place.

Oasis in the storm

Rather than gift giving this year,  we decided to learn something together.  It’s my wife, me  and two children.   The good people at this  center  arranged a private class  just  for us.    They had two teachers,  one to work with the little people and one for the adults.   My kids were mesmerized by the process of creating glass ornaments.  There were no worries about sharp glass because everything they used was smooth .  There was no cutting or dangerous sharp glass for the kids.   My wife and I were taught how to cut glass safely and we made ours’ from scratch.

The studio manager offered us a demonstration of icicle making and we eagerly stayed to watch.  These icicles  are glass that is melted and shaped.

All in all,  a fun and unique opportunity.  Thank you to these patient and very nice people.

Lovely people

My daughter is home from college.  Most days, she sleeps late and can’t wait to get back to her dorm buds.  Mom and daughter attended a glass class together. There were three students and the instructor was wonderful. Daughter is excited about doing more classes while still home on college  COVID close down . I could not be happier to see this enthusiasm coming from her. Thank you Studio 34 and Yvonne.

An upstate gem this studio is

We, my wife and I, are from Erie, Pennsylvania.  We learned about this place from friends who live in Rochester. Our friends set up a private class and included one more couple.  We were told it would be worth the drive.

Our experience was incredible. Our friends were right.  We took a glass sculpture class and had no idea what we were getting into. We were pretty nervous at the beginning.   The instructor had a quiet way about her that reassured us.  Melting glass is an awesome art and we are sure to do more soon.

So nice to be back in the studio!

Our class was put on hold in March, 2020 due to COVID.   We received lots of updates from the studio manager throughout those long months.  The best update  told  us classes had resumed.

We just completed our projects and they  are pretty good .   It took 10 months from the date we began.  Our instructor reviewed and reviewed.    We were given all the time we needed and extra practice time between classes.

I am grateful for how well connected we felt during the lock down.  They offered  a refund if we wanted it and assured us classes would resume.    So glad we finished this class.   Now on to the next fun project.

Thank you.

Introduction to the Beautiful Art of Mosaic

Hello Marilynne!

First, thank you for sharing your amazing studio with RocBrainery! It is through them that I have discovered the gem that is Studio 34! I am inspired and enjoying every moment in the studio and I look forward to spending more time there.

The best place for fun.

My husband wanted to do something different for our vacation this summer.  Instead of traveling, we found places to explore and Studio 34 was  a wonderful experience. and is one of our favorites.   They tailored classes to our kids’ interest and attention spans.  Our  older daughter took a metalsmith class. Our younger daughter learned how to make her own glass bead jewelry.   Our sons did  glass fusing and made bowls.      My husband signed us up for two of their Hot Date Nights and we had a blast.  Their instructors have so much teaching experience and because they have smaller classes than most places,  they can provide the attention you need .   We had fun.  We learned different techniques and we will be back.   I recommend this place if you want to experience new challenges and make beautiful projects.

Great party. Nice people

We took a Date Night class at Studio 34 about 15  years ago.  There were only 3 couples and we had fun.

Now that we have kids,  we wanted to try something new f0r  a birthday party.   The staff here are helpful and patient.  They put together a class that was safe and interesting for our three kids.  They planned  extra  time for refreshments and cake.

Some of the staff are retired teachers.   It shows.  They know how to teach. I am a full time educator and I know high standards of teaching when I see it.

Thank you,  Staff of Studio 34!

Back to this magical place!

We discovered this magical place three years ago when family attended a glass fusing class.   Since then,  we’ve made this our summer destination of choice.   We’ve had a “taste” of stained glass,  torchwork,  and jewelry making.

Staff are so accommodating and flexible.

Jeremy Stockton

Summer haven

Studio 34 is a haven for artistic souls.  Teachers  there are a talented breed of artists who love teaching.   Not everyone can teach.  Because they design their classes to have a small number of students,  its a great environment for learning even if you are timid like me!   Because I’m a school teacher,  I have high standards of teaching.   I found that here.

Those who want to explore their creative side are welcome there  I have to admit I never thought of myself as having a creative bone in my entire body.     Thought I’d give it a go and discovered how fun and easy it was  to explore a new world of fun.

I’m a teacher and have summers off so I was able to take different classes.   My favorites so far  are mosaics and stained glass and flamework sculpture.   Each of these use glass in different ways and  the techniques are very  different.

Beginners sometimes  get caught up trying to create a masterpiece their first time.  Instructors gently try to persuade students  to go easy on themselves as they learn the techniques.   This gentle encouragement is pretty important especially when the student is a perfectionist (me!).

One thing that really impressed me was when a student in the flamework sculpture class was frustrated that his first ever sculpture was not looking like he thought it should.  The instructor had the best attitude which she shared with the student.   Pretty much a different experience I had at another place when I was getting frustrated.   The instructor took my piece and fixed it,  rather than allowing me to learn how to do it myself.

My best memories  for the  2022 summer were the open studio times to work on projects between classes.   They have a great facility that is fully loaded with tools and materials and reference books.    The ability to work on projects outside of class gave me a feeling of peacefulness.    Mosaics is a zen-like activity.    I have have several projects to work on during the school year.

Thank you,  Studio 34 Arts Center!

Unexpected atmosphere

This place offers surprises.   If you are interested in taking up a new hobby or just want to explore an interest but you don’t know much before you delve into it,  you can take their “appetizer” classes.   My wife and I wanted  to  make holiday ornaments to give as gifts.   So they have three different  ornament classes and after the first one,  we signed up for the other two.   Can’t wait to do it again next year.

The flamework icicles class  is our favorite.  Samantha also taught blown glass ornaments.   Two other teachers taught used glass ornaments. (check out Mr. Melty !)

These three teachers provided the first surprise.   Class size was small ,  like 3-5 students.   We got so much hands on with these experienced teachers.   They are  patient with beginners and oh so encouraging.   If you think about it,  flamework is fire. The open atmosphere,  close student contact,  and individual attention made for the best learning experience.

The second surprise is that Studio 34 has classes for all ages.   My grands are taking the Mosaic Mini Workshop .  For the older one (9) , her mom wants to try a birthday party .

A drawback is Studio 34 is not open every day .   I think they’d have a lot more traffic if they expanded their hours.   The manager assured me they can accommodate private classes in  their flexible schedule,  but sometimes there’s a waiting list and suggested scheduling parties 2-4  weeks or more in advance.

Lovely people here.

Family Fusing Fun

Our staycation included a private class at Studio 34 Creative Arts Center.   With ages ranging from 6 to adult,  we thought it would turn out to be a very simple project.    These skilled teachers were able to custom design a class project safe enough for our 6 year old and be challenging enough for her parents and grandma,
This teaching studio is blockbuster of a place.   The manager keeps things running and there’s a steady stream of people coming from different countries to learn there.     Interesting to find out they’ve been offering classes for more than 20 years and we just found out about Studio 34.    So glad to know we found a place comfortable teaching chlldren as well as adults.   Their insistence on small class size is a comfort.  Thank you, Studio 34!
